Rats are some of the most common pests that infest people’s homes and businesses. If you live in a large city, they may seem unavoidable!
While it’s true that rats have become very well adapted to urban and suburban environments, there are still plenty of reliable ways to get rid of them.

Tip #1: Fill Small Holes and Cracks
As natural burrowers, rats have long, slender, flexible bodies, allowing them to crawl through tight spaces, including holes in walls as small as a quarter!
You can never be too careful when it comes to small holes and cracks in your home. Even if it looks too small for a rat to fit through, you’re better safe than sorry.
This can involve cement, plaster, caulk, and more. Consult your local hardware supply store for the best material to fill a gap in your home.
Tip #2: Trim Trees and Bushes in Your Yard
If you have trees, bushes, or shrubs with branches that reach close to a window, this gives rats the perfect launching pad to enter your home.
Rats are phenomenal jumpers. They can even jump up to 4 feet in the air!
For this reason, make sure to trim the limbs of any trees, bushes, or shrubs, so they are more than 4 feet from the nearest window.
Tip #3: Secure All Food Sources
Since rats are such good jumpers, they can easily hop onto a counter or table once they make their way into your home.
Even if you are careful to keep bags and containers of food off of the floor and out of lower cabinets, this may not be enough.
If you leave any containers of food on a counter or table, the odds are, a rat can reach it.
Always be sure that all food sources are secured in a cabinet or shelf more than 4 feet high.
Tip #4: Use Bait and Traps
If it’s too late to prevent rats from entering your home, you can use traps and bait to lure them out from your home.
There are many ways to trap or poison a rat, but at Wildlife x Team, we believe in humane pest removal solutions.
The most humane way to trap the rats around your home is to use a catch-and-release rat cage. Otherwise, you can also use glue traps to temporarily immobilize the rats who visit.
The best bait to attract rats into these traps include peanut butter, fruits, vegetables, meats, and cereals. Rats will eat about anything!
Tip #5: Call a Professional Exterminator
Of course, sometimes you can’t solve all of your infestation issues alone. We recommend calling a professional to quickly put your mind at ease.
